Our college is characterized by the "Four in One" concept, which means that in most national colleges and universities, the departments are typically divided into four separate colleges. It is common for the Chinese department to be part of the College of Liberal Arts, the Social Sciences department to be part of the College of Social Sciences, the Applied Foreign Languages department to be part of the College of Foreign Languages, and the Arts and Design department to be part of the College of Arts. However, in our college, all these departments are combined into one comprehensive college known as the College of Humanities and Social Sciences.

The integrated college exhibits the diversity and depth of knowledge within our institution. By utilizing the teaching and research resources, students will be able to learn interdisciplinary knowledge from all four colleges within one institution, thereby expanding their career opportunities.

Connect with the world through language

Students often ask, "Do I have to have excellent English skills to study in the Applied Foreign Languages department?" In reality, it is more important to have the ability to learn than excellent English skills.

Yuan Ze University's Department of Foreign Languages and Applied Linguistics offers courses such as reading and writing, internships, and international exchanges to help students effectively enhance their foreign language skills. It aims to transform your second language into an asset that empowers you in life, providing you with more possibilities and choices for the future.

What can the Department of Foreign Languages and Applied Linguistics do to help you become more competitive in the future?

Skills are developed gradually and in a progressive manner. The English and Japanese language tracks in the Department of Foreign Languages and Applied Linguistics cultivate language abilities effectively. Listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills are all integrated into the English curriculum with the whole language teaching approach. Furthermore, extensive reading and writing practice outside the classroom is emphasized. The Japanese language curriculum begins with the basic 50 Kana characters and then advances to reading picture books, short texts, and writing exercises. In addition to classroom learning, students are provided with opportunities to learn language through practical usage and immersive environments that promote natural language development.

In what ways can the Department of Foreign Languages and Applied Linguistics benefit you?

"Why should we learn English and Japanese?" Language learning not only opens up more career opportunities but also allows for easy global connections. Studying Foreign Languages and Applied Linguistics doesn't mean you will be limited to linguistic careers. Instead, it serves as an advantage, providing you with more choices and autonomy. Graduates from our department who possess proficiency in Chinese, English, and Japanese—the three major languages—have an advantage in today's globalized economy. Many of our alumni work in foreign or technology companies in a variety of positions, including business, human resources, project management, procurement, international trade, marketing, and administration. Additionally, some pursue careers in tourism-related fields as flight attendants, hotel managers, and tour guides. Apart from corporate settings, many graduates also work as English or Japanese language teachers, civil servants, nonprofit organization staff, or educators in schools.

What makes Yuan Ze University's Department of Foreign Languages and Applied Linguistics unique?

Unlike typical Applied Foreign Language programs, the Department of Foreign Languages and Applied Linguistics at Yuan Ze University has mandatory credits for English and Japanese in the first and second years. Then, either English or Japanese can be selected as a specialty based on student's interests and abilities, and advanced language courses can be pursued in either language track.

Regarding language practice, the curriculum includes translation (including interpretation) and specialized language courses such as Business English, Workplace English, News English, and Travel Japanese. Aside from short-term study and visit activities, the program offers a multifaceted approach to international exchange. It actively plans overseas volunteer projects, dual degree programs, collaborative degree programs, remote video conferences, and professional internships to promote global interaction. There are also opportunities for internships at prominent organizations such as Central Broadcasting Corporation, China Airlines, Far Eastern Group, 5-star hotels in Australia, and the Marriott Resort Hotel in Okinawa. Countless renowned companies await your participation and experience!

The deployment of your foreign language ability is prior to the traditional training
The Department of Foreign Languages and Applied Linguistics at Yuan Ze University stands out with its diverse and flexible curriculum design. Unlike traditional Applied Foreign Language programs that focus on a single second language, Yuan Ze University's program requires mandatory credits for both English and Japanese in the first and second years. This ensures that students develop a solid foundation in both languages and enhances their competitive advantage in the job market.

By providing compulsory courses in both English and Japanese, Yuan Ze University equips students with basic proficiency in two foreign languages. This approach recognizes the importance of multilingualism and prepares students for a wide range of career opportunities that require language proficiency in multiple languages. The program aims to empower students with a well-rounded linguistic skill set that can be leveraged in various professional contexts.

(1) Practical applications of language skills - emphasis on practice opportunities

◆ English: A whole language approach is taken in the design of the English curriculum, integrating listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Students are required to read extracurricularly in addition to their regular classes. Within two years, they must read 200 simple English books and write 200 short essays on their contents.

◆ Japanese: Reading and writing exercises are started in the first year with 50 syllables, while 100 picture books and short essays are introduced in the third year.

(2) Enhance students' proficiency in foreign languages through professional courses

There are many types of professional courses available, including basic linguistics, teaching languages, culture, and literature. The language practice curriculum includes translation (including interpretation), professional languages (such as business English and Japanese, workplace English, news English, tourist Japanese, etc.), and emphasizes content that can be applied in the future.

(3) Develop students' writing skills through practical application

Students can choose their own project topics based on their post-graduation goals. The teacher will provide students with one year of professional writing training for either English or Japanese projects. They will then present their projects in a final report. In addition to academic paper writing, employment-related writing such as market research reports, professional analysis reports, textbook edits such as teaching manuals, translation writing, professional internships, and professional internships (overseas internships) are also included.
